Two studies published in the BMJ shows that eating more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is associated with a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
The first study was based on 9,754 adults with diabetes with a comparison group of 13,662 adults without diabetes. They estimated that just a 66-gram increase in daily fruit and vegetable intake can lower the risk of type 2 diabetes by 25%.
The second study was based on 158,259 women and 36,525 men. Researchers found that those who ate more whole grain foods had a 29% lower rate of type 2 diabetes than those who ate the least.
Both research teams support recommendations to increase fruit, vegetable, and whole grain intake.
