Gourd Plants May Have Anticancer Properties
Bryonolic acid (BrA), a compound present in several gourd plants, such as winter melon and luffa, may have anticancer properties. Researchers have discovered that BrA can inhibit cholesterol acyl transferase (ACAT) activity, which blocks the synthesis of a type of tumor promoter. They tested BrA on different cell lines, and BrA was shown to inhibit cancer cell colony formation by more than 50% on the four different cell lines. It was also shown to be able to block tumor invasiveness.
